The legends of the notorious Chelsea Hotel are synonymous with a sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll lifestyle, as well as New York City at its creative peak. Throughout the 20th century many of the world’s most celebrated artists, writers and musicians called the hotel home before it closed under messy circumstances in 2007. It has yet to reopen.
The Last Chelsea Girl was born from the desire to go back in time and live amongst the idols, art and scandals, to capture the energy, vibrancy and spirit that made the Chelsea so unique and significant. Having had the privilege to live in the hotel’s penthouse pyramid apartment with the largest private rooftop garden in Manhattan for the hotel’s final three years, I wanted to combine lived experience with my fangirl fantasy and research, imagining what it would be like to be there with Sid and Nancy, Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Last Chelsea Girl tells that story. The Last Chelsea Girl is a contemporary fiction novel about a young woman whose past follows her into a notorious celebrity hotel. Jules Thomas arrives at the legendary Chelsea Hotel with a throbbing black eye in desperate need of a fresh start. Soon she is making friends with famous Chelsea Girls from throughout the hotel’s history, including Janis Joplin, Nancy Spungen, and Patti Smith. Navigating a world of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll, they help Jules face her past and find her voice. But when her abusive ex-boyfriend’s property development company threatens to take over the hotel and break its legacy, Jules must fight to save her home, community, and everything she loves before it’s too late. This book is a celebration of female friendships, misfits, community, and hope.
